During Reader's Workshop we are reading the story Wringer by Jerry Spinelli. In our first chapters we learn about our main character's friends, Beans, Mutto and Henry. We question the definition of "true friends."

I think that Beans, Mutto, and Henry are not friends because they gave him a dirty sock, a rotten apple, cigar butt, and one of them put there finger in the middle of Palmer's cake

Thanks for being part of the online conversation, Evan. I agree, I don't think Mutto, Beans and Henry are Palmer's true friends. What do you think true friends would give as a birthday gift instead? Is it just about the value of the gift?

I think that Beans and his possy are a spoiled group because they lick the frosting of the cake and blow out the cndles before you do.The possy even gave palmer a nickname,Snots. I would not be happy with that nickname.

I think that Beans, Mutto, and Henry are not true friends because they would be polite about you they would not stick their fingers in your birthday cake, they would not give you a rotten apple core, a cigar butt, and a smelly old sock for your presents they would not give you a offensive name for a nickname, such as, Snots, they would act polite to you on your birthday and not blow out YOUR candle and be selfish about themselves. I think this because my friends don't do anything like that and be polite to me, one person who taught me about this is my mom because she helps me and is polite to me this shows that real friends would do the opposite of beans, Mutto, and Henry because they do exactly what true friends wouldn't do.

A true friend is a friend who doesn't make a joke out of another friends birthday, a true friend doesn't use the opportunity of getting invited to a friends birthday party to give presents that weren't given thought. A true friend wouldn't gang up with other friends on another friend and bully him.

A true freind would never ever give you a rotton apple core, or a cigar butt, and a dirty sock like Beans, Henray, Mutto did and Plamer thinks he is welcomed into their group and now his nivk name is Snots. I think this because they gave palmer ( Snots) a rotton apple core, a cigar butt, and a dirty sock true friends would never call you Snots or , give a rotton apple core or a cigar butt or a dirty sock on your birthday. One person who taught me about friendship is my mom she said that I always have to stay kind and generous to my friends. A true friend 's says hi or how are you doing not hey snots and they would give you a nice gift for your birthday not a cigar butt and they act like a true friend.

One person in Wringer did not teach me friendship is Beans because he ran his fingers in Palmer's birthday cake and the boys gave him bad birthday presents and they are a cigar bud, a dirty sock and a rotten apple core. Also Beans is the leader of the boys under 10 and he does not act like it so they should have a good leader with the young boys. So now i think that Palmer should not do that.

A true friend doesn't give people disgusting nicknames like Snots,I think this because calling someone Snots can hurt peoples feelings. One person who taught me about friendship is Daniel, who showed me how to act as a true friend.

A true friend does not give you a old sock with a roten apple with a cigar butt and friends also dont stick a fingure in your birthday cake. I think this because its not nice. One person that taught me about friend ship was Charlie.

In the book wringer I don't belive that Palmer's friends Bean,Mutto and henry are actually his friends because on Palmer's 9th birthday his friends called him Snots and gave him a ciggar and a rotton apple and a dirtty sock.

A true friend does not come to your birthday and lick the icing off the cake. They also gave him not thought prezintes like an apple core and a cigar butt, and a sock. And blow out your candles this shows me they are not caring. They also would give you a more thoughtful name not snot. I think that palmer does not care that his friends are almost like bullys. this shows me his friends are greedy and not very true friends.

I truthfully, agree with you Charles because if they WERE true friends they wouldn't just give him a bad nickname like snot they would give him a thoughtful name not just being a bully and calling him snots and bringing him presents on his birthday for their own reasons like to make the other people laugh.

A true friend acts like they respect you. For example, on your Birthday, they don't get you a rotten apple, or a cigar butt, or a dirty sock! You get them a toy or something special that they will appreciate. Also, a true friend doesn't stick their hands in your cake, you use a fork, and you wait until your instucted.

A true friend wouldn't blow out your candles on your birthday or yell your birthday song.

I think that Palmer really doesn't care about whether they are good friends or not because all he cares about is that he is in the "cool" gang at his town, this makes me think he's going to be picked on by his so called "friends" later in the book.
