I think this picture was taken in the 1850's or 1860's in the spring or summer. This picture has mostly adults and five to six kids, possibly,a big family or a small school. In the background I can see a man with lots of animals, also he is on the side of a windmill. I think relates to westward expansion because it is probably a group of people starting a new life in Oregon after their long journey.

Logan, nice job, I never thought that it could be a small school. I could see that because of the size of the building in the background. Also because of how many people are there. I never saw that man by the windmill either.

I think the people in this picture look stressed. It looks like they have had a very long day of work. It looks like this is a very serious family. I think this picture was taken during the day because if I look at it closely I can see clouds. I think this family is a hard working family because the house in the background looks well built for that time. I think they look stressed because to get to that point they had to journey to get to the land, then they had to find the place that they want to build the house, then they had to get the materials to build the house, then, and only then, can they build their house. That is a lot of work.

Alex, I really liked how thought out your post was! I never thought about it the way you did. Like when you said this family looks stressed I thought that they might have a tough day of work, on the farm, and how you thought to include the time of day I thought was very interesting and was very thought out. Great job!

I think this was taken in spring because the grass is short and faded, the sky looks clear, and they are all wearing pants and long sleeves. I think this is a family photo because maybe they just built their house and wanted to remember that moment. I think this was taken at a farm. I this because there are many pigs in the photo and because of the rich soil. This relates to the westward expansion because maybe this family moved west and built their new house there.

I agree with you Peter, but I think these were the pioneers who had to sell their farms to go to the West. Other wise that, I really agree with you.

I think this shows a family that succeeded in making it safely past the Oregon Trail and building their home out of found supplies in the limited amount of time they had, which was six months. They probably just finished building their house and all the necessary furniture inside it because they look very tired and worn out. This was probably during spring or autumn because they have long-sleeved shirts on, but there isn't any snow. I can see farm animals in the background which probably means that either their business depends on the animals' food or that they were farmers that didn't sell their animals when they came to the west, which is also why it relates to westward expansion. It is also about westward expansion because they made it to the west safely. This is what I think this picture is showing me!

I think this is about the people that live on a farm because there is farm animals in the back round of the picture. I think that this picture is at the Ohio River valley because there is rich farm land in this valley. I think this picture was after people came to the Ohio River valley because it looks like they have a small house. This picture was taken in the summer because it is most common to plant crops in the summer and their animals are outside. This relates to Westward expansion because many moved west moved west when the East coast got very crowed or they wanted more land or richer and more farm land.

I agree with you Dawson, but did you also notice that it might be spring because the grass is really really short and the grass is worn down. Your thought are really good though.

I think this is a picture of a family who are trying to take a picture. This was before they made machines that helps make clothes. I can tell because it looks like it was hand made. The house looks very small for a big family. It must of been hard to make a house. First you would have to find a good piece of land. Then you would have to get wood because you couldn't go to the store and get wood. It must of been hard to make a house by yourself.

Impressive thinking, Lindsay! I really enjoyed how you related the clues you found in this picture to our life now! I can tell that you thought this out very carefully, and I like the fact that your response was though tout differently than I thought of it. I never looked at it this way. Good job!

Yeah Lindsay, good job! Do you also remember that in the old days cotton plants were "the king" since cotton was what clothes were mostly made of in the old days. I really agree with your comment about the picture. Good job explaining your thoughts!

I think this is a picture of family travelling a long time to get a house. It was probably free because they would get land if they travel west. Also they are one of the pioneers who lived through the very hard travel from their home to west. This picture was taken because the family was proud of being there. This is also taken back then because one chair is missing and someone has to take the picture. They were also very tired from the long travel. This relates to the west ward expansion because back then they would move to get free land.

I think that a group of builders, teachers, scholars and children are celebrating a new school house, I noticed that there mostly wearing black, and that makes me think it could be a funeral for a family member that died on the way there. this relates to westward expansion because many died on the way there.

Aidan, I never thought about it the way you did I think that was very interesting the way you thought of it, about the funeral. Also, the way you thought they were all wearing black, just keep in mind that the picture was in black and white. I thought that your post was very good and well thought out. Nice job!

This looks like a picture of a big family at their house, or possibly a school. According to my previous knowledge of old schools, that would look about right. That would be great for those people if it was, because back then during westward expansion education was very hard to get, so if that is a school I’m sure love that! It looks about spring, since the grass seems to be dead and they are wearing long sleeves, plus the babies in the back are in blankets, but there is no snow. They seem to be happy if some of them are smiling. Back then many people didn't smile since the picture took so long to process, but if they were willing to smile then they must be! They could possibly also be farmers, since there are sheep in the background. Also in the background there is more houses, meaning this could be an old village.
